Cape Verde’s main opposition party, the PAICV, has declared victory in the country’s parliamentary elections

Cape Verde’s main opposition party, the Partido Africano da Independência de Cabo Verde (PAICV), has declared victory in the country’s parliamentary elections, raising the possibility of a major political shift after years of rule by the governing Movimento para a Democracia (MpD) party.

PAICV leader Francisco Carvalho said the results marked the beginning of “a new Cape Verde”, promising social reforms, a smaller government and stronger democratic institutions.

The elections were also overshadowed by allegations of vote-buying and a high voter abstention rate.

In another major development, Prime Minister Ulisses Correia e Silva announced he would step down as leader of the ruling MpD party following the election outcome.

Speaking in an interview on Caleidoscopio, political analyst Fransual Dias said the outcome could signal a major turning point for the country’s political future.

“These elections could mark an important political turning point for Cape Verde. Many citizens are demanding change, stronger institutions and better social and economic opportunities. The next government will have to respond to those expectations while also preserving the country’s democratic stability,” Dias said.
