Rwanda has announced that its troops will remain deployed in Cabo Delgado, northern Mozambique, to support the fight against insurgency and terrorism, but under a new funding arrangement.
The Rwandan government says Mozambique will now cover the operational costs of the mission, amid criticism from Kigali over what it describes as insufficient long-term financial support from the European Union.
The development has renewed debate over the sustainability of security operations in Cabo Delgado, the role of international partners and Mozambique’s ability to respond to the armed insurgency.
Speaking on the issue, Mozambican civic activist Aly Caetano said the funding shift raises important questions about regional security co-operation and the long-term future of military operations in the conflict-hit province
