The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) has warned that a potential closure of the Strait of Hormuz could trigger a global food security and economic crisis, raising concerns about rising food prices, higher transport costs and disruptions to supply chains worldwide.
The agency cautions that any interruption to one of the world’s most important maritime trade routes could create a “systemic agri-food shock” with far-reaching consequences for global markets in the coming months.
The warning comes amid growing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and concerns that disruptions to energy and commodity shipments could affect agricultural production and food distribution around the world.
FAO has also highlighted the risk of the situation being compounded by the effects of the El Niño weather phenomenon, which could increase the likelihood of droughts and agricultural disruptions in several regions.
