Hundreds of people gathered outside Ireland’s parliament on Thursday in protest following the death of a man from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) who was restrained outside a department store in Dublin.
The incident, which some have compared to the 2020 killing of George Floyd in the United States, has sparked widespread anger and calls for accountability.
Police say Yves Sakila was detained by security guards on one of the capital’s busiest shopping streets last Friday in connection with an alleged shoplifting incident.
He later became unresponsive at the scene and was pronounced dead.
