Angola is set to become the centre of Southern African sport as it hosts the Regional Annual Sports Awards for the first time

Luanda, the capital of Angola, is set to become the centre of Southern African sport as it hosts the Regional Annual Sports Awards for the first time this Friday.

The ceremony will bring together athletes, officials and representatives from the 10 member states of the African Union (AU) Sports Council Region 5, in what organisers describe as a celebration of sporting excellence across the region.

Beyond recognising top performers, the awards aim to honour athletes who have inspired millions through their achievements and contribution to sport in Southern Africa.

AU Sports Council Region 5 President Stainley Mutoya said the event is designed to motivate athletes and recognise their success on and off the field.

“The main aim is to motivate our athletes and celebrate their victorious performances in sport, and also to give props to our athletes who have done us proud in the region and their countries,” Mutoya said. “It’s a strategy for us to ensure we celebrate our own people who have excelled.”

Countries expected to take part include Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Eswatini, Zambia and Zimbabwe, alongside host nation Angola.
