South Africa’s (SA) Electricity and Energy Minister Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa has raised concern over a growing skills crisis in SA’s energy sector.
He warns that a mass exodus of engineers and technicians is placing increasing pressure on the system.
He says the loss of technical expertise has contributed to electricity losses of up to 30% further straining an already fragile power network.
The issue comes as utilities such as City Power in Johannesburg continue to battle ageing infrastructure and severe financial constraints.
Ramokgopa says government is engaging behind closed doors with the private sector, in a bid to find sustainable solutions and ease the burden on electricity suppliers.
