South Africa’s (SA) Transport Minister Barbara Creecy says government is making progress in resolving payment delays at the Road Accident Fund (RAF), which has been grappling with financial and administrative challenges.
The fund, which compensates victims of road accidents, has faced years of backlogs that have in some cases resulted in delayed payouts to claimants.
Creecy said government is preparing legislation aimed at improving the claims process and reducing delays in compensation.
She also confirmed that a hybrid funding model is under consideration to strengthen the fund’s long-term financial sustainability.
Currently, the RAF is largely funded through the fuel levy, but she noted that this model is coming under pressure as SA transitions towards electric vehicles.
Creecy suggested that private motorists may in future be required to contribute directly to the scheme as part of broader efforts to ease pressure on public finances.
Officials say the proposed reforms aim to stabilise the fund and ensure faster, more reliable compensation for road accident victims across the country.
