The African Union (AU) is commemorating Africa Day 2026 with a three-day programme at its headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, celebrating 63 years since the establishment of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), the predecessor of the AU.
Held under the theme, “Sixty-three Years of Unity, Integration and Development, Let’s Celebrate Together”, the celebrations run from May 23 to 25 and bring together diplomats, government representatives, civil society organisations, youth and women’s groups, development partners and members of the African diaspora.
Activities include sporting events, cultural exhibitions, entertainment and a cultural bazaar, culminating in the official Africa Day ceremony on May 25.
The event features address from senior AU officials, including the Chairperson of the AU Commission, representatives of the Ethiopian government and members of the diplomatic community.
Observed annually on May 25, Africa Day marks the founding of the OAU in 1963 and serves as an opportunity to reflect on the continent’s progress in unity, integration, peace and development.
