Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has said the team will need to manage both defensive and attacking phases carefully in the second leg of the CAF Champions League final against AS FAR.

Sundowns travel to Rabat, Morocco, with a 1-0 advantage from the first leg played in Pretoria, placing the South African side in a position to secure the title with a controlled performance.

Speaking before the match, Cardoso said the game on Sunday is likely to require adaptability, with both teams expected to contest possession. Cardoso said success would depend on how effectively the team handles different phases of play.

Cardoso said these phases include defending without the ball and maintaining structure while in possession. Cardoso said defensive organisation remains a key component, particularly in a match where small margins could determine the outcome.

Cardoso said defensive actions can play an important role in shaping the match, noting that regaining possession quickly can create attacking opportunities. At the same time, Cardoso said maintaining control when in possession is aligned with the team’s style of play.

Cardoso said the team’s identity includes balancing defensive discipline with structured attacking play. Cardoso said managing transitions between these phases will be important during the match.

Set pieces were also highlighted as a key factor. Cardoso said both defensive and attacking set plays could influence the result, particularly in a closely contested fixture.

The second leg will determine the outcome of the final, with AS FAR expected to push for a result at home. Sundowns will need to manage pressure while maintaining composure to protect the aggregate lead.

The match forms part of a broader pattern in continental competitions where away performances in decisive fixtures can shape outcomes.

Sundowns are aiming to secure a positive result to claim the title. Both teams are expected to adopt structured approaches, with the outcome likely to depend on execution in key moments across the match.
