South Africa’s National Parks (SANPARKS) says it is deploying additional park rangers and will also enhance its technology to improve surveillance and early warning capabilities at the Kruger National Park, Mpumalanga Province.
This is after an elderly tourist couple was found murdered in the northern remote section of the park on Friday last week.
Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment Minister Willie Aucamp has described the incident as shocking and unprecedented, saying it’s the first case of its kind reported in the history of the Kruger National Park.
SANPARKS says the outcomes of police investigations on this matter will also help guide specific interventions needed to strengthen existing security at Kruger National Park.
SANPARKS says these actions will reinforce its ongoing commitment to visitor safety and operational readiness.
They have also confirmed that existing technology systems assisted in identifying the vehicle linked to the missing tourists.
