Kenya’s Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has ordered a major overhaul of President William Ruto’s security detail after a man breached the President’s protective cordon during a public event in eastern Kenya.
The incident occurred during a thanksgiving gathering when a man carrying what appeared to be a Bible managed to access the stage and briefly placed his arm around Ruto while he was addressing supporters. Footage of the encounter quickly spread on social media.
Although no injuries were reported, Kanja described the incident as a serious security lapse.
“Any security breach involving the President is unacceptable and a matter of the gravest national concern,” Kanja said.
In response, authorities have appointed a new head of the Presidential Escort Unit, while several senior officers responsible for presidential protection have reportedly been removed from their positions or placed on leave pending further review.
