About 300 Ghanaians due to depart from SA
Ghana’s High Commissioner to South Africa (SA), Benjamin Quashie, says the first group of 300 Ghanaian nationals is expected to be repatriated today, despite minor logistical challenges at OR Tambo International Airport.
Quashie says both documented and undocumented nationals have approached the High Commission in Pretoria, Gauteng Province, with around 800 Ghanaians requesting assistance to return home amid growing safety concerns.
The group is expected to land in Accra before making their way to their respective communities, as part of an ongoing repatriation process.
This comes against the backdrop of rising tensions in parts of SA over undocumented immigrants, with protests intensifying and a nationwide demonstration planned for June 30.
Quashie says a second group of Ghanaian nationals is expected to be repatriated later this week, as efforts continue to assist those wishing to return home.
