Renamo, is grappling with a severe outbreak of internal friction

Mozambique’s principal opposition party, Renamo, is grappling with a severe outbreak of internal friction after a disgruntled faction of its membership escalated grievances directly to the state judiciary. The group has filed a formal criminal complaint with the country’s Attorney-General targeting the upper echelons of the party, currently led by Ossufo Momade.

The complainants allege a systemic lack of transparency in the administration of public funds allocated to the movement. The formal petition accuses the current party leadership of failing to adequately account for internal finances and misusing financial resources legally earmarked for organizational activities and national political campaigns.

The escalating legal dispute has triggered substantial concern among political analysts regarding internal party governance, institutional accountability, and the long-term stability of Mozambique’s historic opposition movement.

Weighing in on the deepening schism, legal expert Gerson da Silva, President of the Associação Mentes Resilientes, noted that the public nature of the financial dispute signals a widening fracture that could deeply impact the party’s cohesion and national standing.
