More than 6.8 million Guineans went to the polls on Sunday in legislative and local government elections that marked a significant milestone in the country’s transition back to constitutional rule.
Voters elected members of parliament and municipal councilors in a process seen as the final step in restoring democratic governance.
The elections followed the December 2025 presidential vote, in which President Mamady Doumbouya secured a decisive victory.
Guinean citizens living in South Africa (SA) also cast their ballots at the Guinean Embassy in Pretoria, and other polling stations located in Johannesburg, Gauteng Province, Durban KwaZulu-Natal Province and Cape Town, Western Cape Province..
Madame Dabo, First Counsellor in Charge of Economic Affairs at the Embassy of the Republic of Guinea in SA said the elections completed the country’s democratic transition by establishing a fully elected National Assembly.
“These elections are quite important for us because it sort of is the seal of all the previous elections ending the full transition state of the Republic of Guinea by now the appointment of the National Assembly, the legislative power. So, it sorts of put a term to all the elections and fulfilled the vision of President Mamadi Doumboua in fully turning Guinea into a democratic state.”
