The Conference of the Left has ended in Johannesburg, Gauteng Province, South Africa (SA) with the establishment of the Council of the Left.
Organisers say the Council will be an instrument of unity in action and not as a command structure.
They also denounced the current constitution as having failed to serve the poor and the working class.
The three-day gathering saw over 300 representatives from different political parties, civil society, academics and youth and women formations amongst others.
The delegates of the Conference of the Left have called for sweeping economic reforms.
Political parties, civic organisation, traditional leaders and academics among others met under one roof to forge unity of the left-wing parties.
They believe their gathering was the hope for the country’s poor and marginalised.
They also have resolved to establish the Council of the Left to co-ordinate their activities and programs.
Although these parties vowed to work together, they have also vowed not to erode their autonomy.
