Hundreds of people in central Kenya blockaded roads with burning tyres in protest against United States (US) plans to establish an Ebola isolation centre at an American military base.
The demonstrators in the town of Nanyuki say they believe preparations for the quarantine facility are continuing. They say this is despite a recent court ruling which ordered the suspension of the plan.
The two organisations cited Kenya’s fragile health systems as the reason why foreign Ebola patients should not be quarantined in the country.
And the US officials said on Thursday that the US is planning to send Americans exposed to the Ebola while abroad to a new facility in Kenya instead of flying them home.
Health Minister Aden Duale said the quarantine centre was for everyone and not exclusively for the US nationals. The US government intends to commit around $13.5 million towards the Kenya Ebola preparedness efforts.
