An Ethiopian opposition leader has accused global media of maintaining a disproportionately negative narrative that ignores domestic progress and voter optimism ahead of the country’s elections.

Speaking during an interview on Rise and Shine, Eyob Mesafint of the Ethiopian Citizens for Social Justice party pushed back against mounting criticism that the polls are being fundamentally overshadowed by conflict, limited participation, and questions over credibility.

While Mesafint acknowledged that parts of the country affected by insecurity, particularly in the Amhara and Tigray regions, were unable to participate in the vote, he argued that these areas represent a limited share of the electorate. He insisted that the majority of eligible voters were still expected to take part, meaning the final outcome would remain broadly representative and would not significantly affect the formation of a government.

The vote is widely expected to secure another term for Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and his ruling Prosperity Party, which currently holds a dominant majority in parliament.

Ethiopia’s electoral process has faced intense scrutiny from international observers who point to ongoing regional conflict and question whether the vote can be fully inclusive or competitive under current conditions.

Mesafint, however, dismissed what he described as overly bleak portrayals of the country, arguing that while Ethiopia faces serious socio-economic and security challenges, there remains significant public hope and active engagement in the political process.
