Building public trust in elections remains a central challenge for Southern African nations despite significant democratic progress across the region, according to the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC).
Speaking at the 13th New Commissioners’ Orientation Programme in Johannesburg, IEC Chairperson Mosotho Moepya stated that the gathering of electoral leaders from across the Southern African Development Community (SADC) demonstrates a shared commitment to strengthening democracy and improving election management.
Moepya noted that the orientation programme is designed to promote collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and regional solidarity among member states. He stressed that SADC countries must work together to enhance electoral excellence and ensure the delivery of credible, transparent, and peaceful elections.
Highlighting the region’s goal of advancing together, Moepya added that no single country can become a center of democratic excellence while others are left behind.
