The Judicial Court of Maputo has ordered prominent social activist Adriano Nuvunga to pay $15 600 in damages

The Judicial Court of Maputo has ordered prominent social activist Adriano Nuvunga, Executive Director of the Centre for Democracy and Human Rights, to pay 1 million Meticais ($15 600) in damages following a defamation and slander conviction. The court also handed Nuvunga a six-month prison sentence, which has been converted into a fine.

The legal battle stems from public allegations made by Nuvunga during the tense 2024 post-election period. He had claimed that Albino Forquilha received 219 million Meticais ($3.4 million) to influence the nation’s highly contested “electoral truth” debate. The Office of the Attorney-General of Mozambique investigated the claims but subsequently closed the case due to a total lack of evidence.

The judgment has swiftly reignited intense domestic debate regarding the boundaries of freedom of expression, corruption advocacy, and public accountability. Civil society organisations and legal experts, including Gerson da Silva, legal analyst and President of the Associação Mentes Resilientes, are closely monitoring the case due to its chilling implications for civic activism and public interest advocacy across Mozambique.
