Russell endured a challenging weekend in Monte Carlo, struggling for pace in qualifying before starting sixth, significantly behind team-mate Kimi Antonelli, who secured pole. During the race, Russell worked his way up the order and appeared on course for a podium finish, but a late drive-through penalty dropped Russell down to 12th and out of the points.
The penalty followed a pit lane speeding infringement, with Russell initially handed a five-second penalty. However, Mercedes failed to bring Russell in during a Safety Car period to serve the time penalty, a move that other teams executed. The oversight resulted in a harsher drive-through sanction.
Wolff acknowledged the error, saying the team needed to review communication and decision-making processes. Wolff said the failure to serve the original penalty was a clear mistake by the team rather than the driver.
Despite Russell’s second consecutive race without scoring points, Wolff said there was no concern over performance levels. Wolff said Russell had shown strong form earlier, including a Sprint win and pole position in Canada before retiring due to a power unit failure.
Wolff said Formula One performance is shaped by the car’s characteristics and race circumstances rather than sudden changes in driver ability. Wolff added that Russell remains among the strongest drivers on the grid and that recent results do not reflect overall capability.
The contrast in Monaco was highlighted by Antonelli’s dominant performance, with the Italian driver securing a career-first Grand Slam. The result widened the championship gap between the two Mercedes drivers, with Russell now trailing significantly and slipping behind Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton in the standings.
Wolff said it was important for the team to remain grounded and focus on analysing data to understand fluctuations in performance, pointing to Monaco and Miami as difficult weekends that do not represent the broader trend of the season.
Wolff said Mercedes has strong confidence in pairing both drivers, adding that Russell is expected to return to form and contribute to the team’s bid for the constructors’ championship.
