The world is experiencing the highest number of state conflicts since the end of the Second World War, according to a sobering new study by the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO).
The institute’s annual Conflict Trends report revealed that a record 65 conflicts involving at least one government were active over the past year. Along with the spike in active battlefields, the report issued a stark warning regarding a surge in deliberate attacks targeting civilian populations.
The human toll of this global instability has been catastrophic, with more than 245 000 deaths reported as a direct result of active fighting or political violence in 2025.
According to PRIO’s data, Africa remains the region most heavily impacted by these state-driven conflicts, followed by Asia, and then the Middle East.
