In a statement on Thursday, the AU said the latest developments risk worsening an already fragile international environment, despite ongoing diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions. The AU cautioned that continued confrontations between the two countries could undermine peace and security beyond the region.

The AU urged all parties to exercise restraint and avoid actions that may intensify the situation. It emphasised that dialogue and diplomacy remain the only sustainable means of resolving disputes, calling on both sides to recommit to constructive engagement.

The AU highlighted the broader global implications of instability in the Gulf region, noting that disruptions in this area can have direct economic consequences for African countries. Rising tensions could affect global energy markets, drive up fuel and transportation costs and place additional pressure on already strained economies across the continent.

According to the AU, many African nations remain vulnerable to external shocks, particularly fluctuations in oil prices and supply chains. Increased costs for energy and commodities could impact inflation, trade balances and overall economic growth in several countries.

The AU also stressed that prolonged geopolitical instability may disrupt global trade and investment flows, further complicating development efforts in Africa. With many economies still recovering from recent global challenges, the Commission warned that additional shocks could undermine progress.

Reaffirming its position, the AU said it supports all diplomatic initiatives aimed at de-escalating tensions between the US and Iran. It also called on the international community to intensify mediation efforts and prioritise peaceful solutions.

The AU said a negotiated settlement would not only help stabilise the region but also contribute to broader global economic and political stability.
