Indications are mounting that a major diplomatic breakthrough to halt hostilities between the United States (US) and Iran is within reach, with negotiators signaling that a preliminary agreement could be signed within days.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi confirmed that once the concluding phases of talks are finalised, the accord will be signed remotely by both nations. The optimism is mirrored in Washington, where a senior US official stated there is an estimated 85% confidence level that the deal will be secured in the coming days.

Further momentum has come from regional intermediaries, with the Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announcing that a text has already been mutually agreed upon by the negotiating parties.

However, regional diplomatic analysts caution that any immediate agreement will not constitute a definitive, comprehensive peace treaty between the two long-time adversaries. Instead, the upcoming document is expected to serve as a memorandum of understanding, mapping out the framework for future bilateral engagement and leaving the most challenging political hurdles still to be resolved.
