The first group of approximately 2 400 Malawian nationals currently accommodated at KwaZulu-Natal province’s Sherwood Hall in Glenwood is expected to begin their journey back to Malawi shortly, eThekwini Mayor Cyril Xaba has announced.
Xaba confirmed that about 200 women and children will be prioritised during the initial phase of the repatriation process. The move follows a significant surge in deportations, marked by the return of 980 undocumented individuals who were bussed back to Malawi at SA taxpayers’ expense on Thursday.
The Department of Home Affairs is scheduled to transport the remaining individuals once a rigorous verification process is concluded. Giving an update on the logistics, Xaba stated that seven cross-border buses have already arrived and been cleared for roadworthiness. SA and Malawian officials are currently working together to reconcile and verify the repatriation lists to ensure a smooth departure.
