South Africa’s (SA) national football team, Bafana Bafana, are determined to bounce back in their upcoming group fixtures at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, following a disappointing 2-0 defeat to co-hosts Mexico in the tournament’s opening match in Mexico City.
The squad is aiming to replicate their dramatic turnaround from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast, where they suffered an opening-match loss to Mali but recovered spectacularly to claim the bronze medal.
SA Football Association (SAFA) National Executive Committee (NEC) member Pooby Govindasamy emphasised that the primary objective remains reaching the knockout stages of the World Cup for the first time in four tournament appearances.
“On behalf of the SAFA NEC and our fellow countrymen, we wish Bafana Bafana all the best. We also thank the SABC for the unwavering support they have given to the team and to us,” Govindasamy stated. “We stand a good chance. I am very optimistic that we will reach the second round. Getting past that stage would be a personal bonus, but I am confident our boys will do well.”
Currently based in Pachuca, Mexico, the SA delegation will depart for the United States on Tuesday ahead of their crucial second Group A clash against the Czech Republic.
Despite the daunting logistics of the expanded tournament, Govindasamy dismissed concerns that the extensive travel schedule would negatively affect the players’ performance.
“The travel demands are heavy and challenging for all teams, but our players have extensive experience travelling across the continent with their respective clubs, such as Mamelodi Sundowns, Orlando Pirates, and Kaizer Chiefs,” Govindasamy noted. “They are well-accustomed to these conditions, so this is nothing unusual. Given the sheer magnitude of the tournament, I am certain it will not be an issue for them.”
