A retired Nigerian Army General who was abducted by gunmen in the country’s volatile north-west region has died in captivity, the military has confirmed.
Major General Rabe Abubakar, who served prominently as Nigeria’s Chief Military Spokesperson between 2015 and 2017, was seized alongside his wife and driver on May 30 while travelling through Katsina State to attend a wedding. Armed men reportedly intercepted his vehicle, firing at the car before taking the trio hostage.
Days before the military confirmed his death, a distressing video surfaced on social media showing a frail Abubakar in captivity alongside his wife and other hostages. In the footage, the retired general appeared to have suffered a severe injury to his left leg. The current condition and whereabouts of his wife and driver remain unconfirmed.
