African leaders, international donors, and United Nations agencies have gathered for emergency talks to mount a swift, continent-wide response to a worrying outbreak of Ebola.

The high-level summit, called and chaired by Burundian President and African Union (AU) Chairman Évariste Ndayishimiye, was pulled together to immediately unlock emergency funding and political backing before the virus can slip across borders.

Addressing the delegates, Chairperson of the AU Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, made it clear that containment relies entirely on how quickly neighbouring countries sync up their border controls and health surveillance teams. Youssouf pushed member states to look beyond just putting out this current fire, arguing that the continent must invest heavily in building up genuinely resilient local healthcare systems so countries aren’t caught off guard by future health crises.

While praising the bravery of frontline doctors and emergency response teams already working under immense pressure, Youssouf also expressed his deep condolences to the families who have already lost loved ones to the disease.

The AU has pledged to work hand-in-hand with international humanitarian groups to channel medical supplies and financial aid directly to the hardest-hit communities, warning that real continental solidarity is the only way to prevent a repeat of past devastating epidemics.
