Cristiano Ronaldo’s record-equalling sixth World Cup appearance got off to a frustrating start on Wednesday night as a resilient Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) fought back to claim a historic 1-1 draw against Portugal.
Making their first World Cup finals appearance since 1974, when the nation competed as Zaire, the Leopards more than held their own against the European giants in their Group K opener.
Portugal took an expected early lead through midfielder João Neves, but the African side refused to drop their heads. The equaliser came courtesy of Brentford forward Yoane Wissa, who rose highest to power home a brilliant header and secure the DRC’s first-ever point at a World Cup tournament.
The achievement is a monumental one for the Congolese squad, whose tournament preparations were severely disrupted by a sudden Ebola outbreak back home before their departure.
