More than a month into the outbreak, the DRC had initially reported over 780 cases and 180 deaths. However, updated figures from authorities now show infections have surpassed 1 000 confirmed cases, with at least 254 deaths, underscoring the escalating crisis. Uganda has recorded 19 cases, including two deaths.
Despite expanded response measures, the World Health Organisation (WHO) says current efforts remain insufficient. WHO Africa Emergency Response Lead Dr Rose Belizaire said the gap between needs and action remains significant. “On a scale of zero to ten, we are at about three or four,” Belizaire said.
Capacity has increased, with around 400 treatment beds and four operational laboratories, but transmission continues to outpace interventions. Officials say the response involves multiple pillars, including surveillance, testing, infection control and community support, alongside food and psychosocial assistance for affected families.
Belizaire said the challenge is not expertise, but resources.“They know what needs to be done, what they are missing are the means,” Belizaire said.
