The organiser of the planned June 30 march, Jacinta Ngobese Zuma, says South African (SA) government must take full responsibility for any outcomes linked to the nationwide protest.
This comes as her movement March and March prepares for a shutdown, calling for undocumented migrants to leave the country a stance that has intensified debate around immigration and public safety.
Briefing the media, Ngobese Zuma criticised government’s handling of immigration, accusing authorities of failing to address what she described as weak enforcement systems and widespread corruption.
The March and March, alongside a coalition of allied civil society and civic organisations, used the briefing to outline their demands and mobilise support ahead of the demonstrations.
Jacinta Ngobese Zuma says: “Whose responsibility is it to protect the country, is it not our responsibility, you can’t place that on us. If the government is going to be spending millions of rands, then they must work for it. They must show us that they can be able to protect the country. We can’t be complaining every day over our borders, being porous, and then failing to protect us at the same time. And when we decide we want to stand up against them, suddenly everyone has a voice about how we must take responsibility.”
