FIFA’s disciplinary committee has issued a five-match suspension to Qatar midfielder Assim Madibo following a challenge that left Canada’s Ismaël Koné with severe leg fractures

FIFA’s disciplinary committee has issued a five-match suspension to Qatar midfielder Assim Madibo following a challenge that left Canada’s Ismaël Koné with severe leg fractures during their World Cup match last Thursday.

Madibo was sent off during Qatar’s 6-0 defeat after a foul that resulted in Koné suffering fractures to both his tibia and fibula. Following a review of the incident, FIFA’s disciplinary body officially ruled the tackle as serious foul play. The resulting five-game ban remains subject to appeal.

Koné, who was born in the Ivory Coast and currently plays his club football for Italian side Sassuolo, underwent surgery in Vancouver to repair the injuries. The midfielder will miss the remainder of the World Cup tournament due to the recovery period. Following the match, Madibo visited Koné in the hospital.

The tournament continues for the Canadian squad as Canada prepares to face South Africa this coming Sunday, June 28, at 21:00 CAT.
