The South African (SA) Government has congratulated Bafana Bafana on their impressive victory, wishing the team continued success for the remainder of the tournament.
“The impressive result is a proud moment for SA and reflects the team’s determination, discipline and fighting spirit on one of the world’s biggest sporting stages. The performance has inspired hope and excitement among SA at home and abroad, while showcasing the country’s football talent to the world,” reads the statement.
SA celebrated a first World Cup knockout berth with jubilant scenes on Wednesday after Thapelo Maseko’s second-half strike secured a 1-0 victory over South Korea, who still have a chance of advancing as one of the best third-placed teams.
Maseko fired into the bottom corner in the 63rd minute to put SA, who will face co-hosts Canada in Los Angeles on June 28, on four points behind Group A winners Mexico, who beat the Czech Republic 3-0.
SA have written their own history at the FIFA World Cup 2026 in the Americas. Bafana Bafana advanced to the knockout stage of the global showpiece for the first time ever with a well deserved one-nil (1-0)victory over the more fancied Korea Republic in their last Group.
SA coach Hugo Broos praised his team for their tactical performance after they beat South Korea in their Group A World Cup showdown.
“I think we played a very good game tactically. It was very good; everyone did their job… I’m very proud of the performance of my team,” Broos said.
