The Ministry of Health in Malawi has announced the nationwide launch of the Lenacapavir (PrEP) injection in public health facilities starting July 1.
The rollout introduces a highly effective, long-acting option for individuals at high risk of HIV infection. Ministry of Health Secretary for Administration, Bestone Chisamile, confirmed that the injection only needs to be administered once every six months, making it the longest-acting HIV prevention method currently available.
The initiative is part of the Malawian government’s broader strategy to drastically curb new transmissions and achieve its goal of ending AIDS as a public health threat by 2030. The six-monthly injection will complement existing prevention methods already available in the country, such as daily oral PrEP, other injectable treatments, and condoms.
Malawi, which has approximately one million people aged 15 to 49 living with HIV, has made significant progress in its response to the epidemic, having already successfully met key UNAIDS treatment targets.
