Retired General Higino Carneiro has formalised his candidacy for the leadership of Angola’s ruling MPLA party, submitting more than 19 000 signatures of support to the internal electoral commission.
Following the submission, the pre-candidate claimed that his team faced intense pressure, persecution, and acts of intimidation while gathering the required signatures across several provinces.
Carneiro’s leadership bid comes at a highly contentious time, as he currently faces formal accusations of embezzlement and money laundering. He has firmly rejected the charges, citing his constitutional right to the presumption of innocence.
