The assessment, conducted by IIA Quality Services, awarded the function a “Fully Achieves” rating, the highest possible under the newly introduced Global Internal Audit Standards.
The External Quality Assessment evaluated the effectiveness, independence and overall quality of the Bank’s internal audit activities. The certification provides independent international validation of the function’s performance.
The review process, carried out at least every five years, forms part of the profession’s quality assurance framework and ensures alignment with internationally recognised standards.
The recognition reinforces the AfDB’s commitment to strong governance, accountability and sound risk management practices. Bank Group Auditor General Maurice Goddard described the certification as a major milestone. “Achieving a ‘Fully Achieves’ rating confirms the strength, independence and quality of our internal audit function,” Goddard said.
The Bank said the certification underscores its adherence to high standards in internal controls and oversight, while supporting broader institutional integrity.
