The road to medals often starts long before the opening ceremony. South Africa’s (SA) Proteas netball team have deliberately lined up three warm-up matches against continental rivals Uganda, believing tough opposition is the best way to expose weaknesses before the Commonwealth Games.
In high-performance sport, success depends as much on planning and preparation as it does on talent.
Proteas netball captain Khanyisa Chawane believes the long-standing rivalry with Uganda is exactly what the team needs to sharpen their game.
“They’re not going to make it easy obviously,” Chawane said. “It’s going to make them happy if they beat us. But I don’t think they’re going to beat us. But I do think they’re a great team to prepare for us to go to the Commonwealth Games.”
