The United Nations (UN) is observing the International Day of Cooperatives today, July 4, under the theme “Co-operatives for a Peaceful World”. Announced alongside the International Co-operative Alliance, this year’s commemoration highlights how co-operative enterprises drive social justice, cushion economic insecurity, and mend fractured communities. In a global climate strained by conflict and inequality, the UN emphasises that true peace requires democratic ownership and shared responsibility rather than capital-driven gains.
The global co-operative movement now includes more than 12% of humanity across 3 million cooperatives worldwide. These people-centered businesses sustain livelihoods by providing jobs and work opportunities to 280 million people, which accounts for roughly 10% of the world’s employed workforce.
By anchoring wealth locally and spreading benefits equitably among members, the co-operative model remains a crucial vehicle for poverty reduction and inclusive global development.
