South Africa’s (SA) Gauteng Health Department has hit a massive milestone after completely overtaking its first-month targets for the rollout of the new HIV prevention injection, Lenacapavir.
The rollout is aimed at giving extra protection to individuals who are at a substantial risk of contracting HIV, a move that pushes SA much closer to its goal of ending AIDS as a public health threat by 2030.
Department Spokesperson Steve Mabona confirmed that the team has already received their next batch of stock, ensuring the rollout won’t face any supply disruptions.
“The numbers are not lying, we surpassed our target, which we were targeting about 4000, we’re at about 6000,” Mabona said. “And we have already received the second consignment of our stock, which we’re not going to be depleted. This will assist in the process, to make sure that there’s no interruption when it comes to the rollout itself.”
