US President delivers Independence Day speech

United States (US) President Donald Trump delivered a history-focused speech in Washington at a weather-disrupted gala marking the 250th anniversary of America’s independence from Britain. The “Salute to America Gala” on the National Mall was delayed for hours after organisers evacuated attendees due to the threat of heavy thunderstorms. Despite the disruption, Trump used the platform to celebrate American history while weaving in political messages, attacking communists, and promising to protect the right of citizens to own weapons.

During his address, Trump praised the country’s legacy and current progress, stating that for two and a half centuries, the American republic has stood as the crowning achievement of human history.

He called the country the home of freedom and liberty, describing the US flag as the banner of the most exceptional nation on earth and declaring that the country is performing better now than ever before.
