The long-term future of Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has been thrown into fresh uncertainty following intense speculation linking the Franco-Malian tactician with the vacant Algeria national team manager’s job. The latest twist comes despite recent reports suggesting that the coach had already committed his future to Nigeria by agreeing to terms on a contract extension with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
Amid the growing distraction, former Super Eagles defender Efetobore Sodje has weighed in on the saga, urging the football federation to tie down Chelle to a new deal for the sake of squad stability. However, the former international warned that the NFF must drop any plans to have Chelle pull double duty by also managing the country’s under-23 Olympic team.
Sodje argues that handling the senior national side is a massive, standalone operation that requires undivided attention. He has advised the federation to appoint a dedicated manager for the youth setup instead, allowing Chelle to focus purely on the main squad while keeping an oversight role to help transition emerging young talent into the senior international side.
With Algeria reportedly monitoring the situation closely, the pressure is now on the NFF to finalise the paperwork and clear up the coaching situation before the next round of competitive fixtures.
