AU Chief Mahmoud Ali Youssouf backs Mali following widespread militant strikes

The African Union (AU) has strongly condemned a series of co-ordinated terrorist attacks launched across northern, central, and southern Mali on Saturday.

In an official statement released from the continental body’s headquarters, the Chairperson of the AU Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, expressed deep condolences to the families of the victims and reaffirmed the AU’s full solidarity with the Malian government and its citizens.

The widespread assaults underscore the persistent and severe threat that violent extremism poses to the stabilization of Mali, the wider Sahel region, and the African continent as a whole. The AU leadership noted that the coordinated nature of the strikes highlights the urgent need for enhanced collective security efforts, urging that all counter-terrorism initiatives remain deeply committed to international humanitarian law and the protection of civilians.

Reaffirming its long-term diplomatic and security stance, the Commission pledged its unwavering support to the Malian authorities alongside ongoing regional frameworks aimed at restoring lasting peace and degrading militant networks across the Sahel.
