Tanzanian security forces have launched a large-scale security operation, arresting dozens of activists and deploying heavy military patrols across major cities to completely shut down planned anti-government protests.
Organized by youth networks, the demonstrations are demanding extensive democratic reforms and the immediate release of jailed opposition leader Tundu Lissu. Protesters intentionally timed the rallies for this morning to coincide with the country’s historic Saba Saba celebrations today, July 7.
However, authorities have issued stern warnings against the gatherings, heavily reinforcing key areas with a visible military presence to strictly enforce the government’s blanket ban on political rallies.
