The South Africa’s Motor Industry Staff Association (MISA) is calling for investigations and the prosecution of municipal officials responsible for failing to pay workers’ pension contributions into their pension funds.
Last week, Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana revealed that municipalities across the country had withheld at least $103 million deducted from workers’ salaries as pension contributions.
Godongwana said this means affected workers could struggle to access their pension benefits when the time comes.
MISA Spokesperson Phakamile Hlubi-Majola says the union wants officials to be held personally accountable.
“MISA calls for urgent investigations, prosecutions and consequence management. Pension contributions are not optional; they are a legal and moral obligation. Workers cannot continue to suffer while officials exploit systemic failures for personal gain.”
