São Tomé and Príncipe presidential campaigns begin with widespread appeals for peace

The campaign trail is well underway for São Tomé and Príncipe’s upcoming presidential election on July 19, with political leaders and civil society issuing widespread appeals for peace, tolerance, and strict adherence to democratic rules.

The Constitutional Court initially cleared five candidates to run in the high-stakes poll. However, the race was thrown into some confusion following a late withdrawal by candidate Jorge Bom Jesus. Because his decision to step down was announced past the official legal deadline, election officials have confirmed that his name will still appear on the final ballot papers.

To ensure transparency and international monitoring throughout the polling process, the European Union has already deployed an election observation mission to the island nation.

Speaking on the current political climate and the outlook for the crucial vote, São Toméan political analyst Liberato Moniz noted that while the atmosphere remains calm, the late changes to the ballot could require extra voter education.
