South African court postpones Krejcir case to September

A South African (SA) court has postponed an application by convicted Czech organised crime boss Radovan Krejcir, who is challenging what he calls unreasonable delays in his cases and human rights abuses behind bars.

The Specialised Commercial Crimes Court sitting in Palm Ridge, SA, moved the application to September 16. The matter, which is tied to a 2013 fraud and money laundering case, was only partly heard because Krejcir told the court he wasn’t feeling well. He reluctantly began arguing his case anyway, claiming that the SA Department of Correctional Services is violating his constitutional rights by withholding his chronic medication and failing to provide meals that meet his dietary needs.

Krejcir argued that this lack of medical attention, which he claims goes against several expert medical reports, is the main reason his court matters keep getting delayed. The underworld kingpin is currently serving a 35-year prison sentence at the Kgosi Mampuru Correctional Centre in Pretoria, following his 2015 conviction for attempted murder, assault, and kidnapping.
