South Africa’s (SA) former Police Minister and National Commissioner, Bheki Cele, has told an inquiry into delays in prosecuting apartheid-era crimes that his background as an anti-apartheid activist influenced his decision not to approve state funding for the legal costs of alleged perpetrators.
The inquiry is examining why many cases identified by SA’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission have yet to be investigated or prosecuted.
Giving evidence in Johannesburg, Gauteng Province, Cele denied there was political interference during his time in office.
He added that the delays were instead the result of a chronic lack of resources.
