Some South Africans (SA) are doing charitable work in honour of the late former President, Nelson Mandela. Kwakwas Makwaka summited Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania last year, helping to raise funds for vulnerable girls on the continent.
The funds have been used to purchase sanitary towels to keep girls in school.
Makwakwa says he was touched to see how young girls struggle with the lack of necessities such as sanitary towels.
In 2025, he was part of the Trek4Mandela team that reached the Uhuru peak of Mount Kilimanjaro.
Makwakwa went to Mount Kilimanjaro again this year to observe while his father and his 13-year-old sister summited.
Makwakwa says, “I did that at the age of 18 in my matric year. I did it with my father; it was the most memorable experience I have ever had. Just being here again brings those memories. I am grateful to be back here.”
