Sudan government has fiercely rejected new sanctions imposed by the United State (US) over allegations that the national army used chemical weapons in its ongoing war against the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
Officials in Khartoum labelled the punitive measures illegal and have explicitly challenged Washington to present any concrete evidence backing up the claims. The Sudanese Foreign Ministry maintains that the country strictly complies with the Chemical Weapons Convention and files regular compliance updates to the global watchdog, dismissing the US move as politically and commercially motivated.
While the US State Department announced the fresh sanctions last month, it has yet to release specific details or public evidence regarding the alleged chemical deployment. However, international media reports have previously pointed to the army’s alleged use of chlorine gas near the strategic Al-Jaili oil refinery, north of the capital, during clashes in 2024.
The developments come as Washington attempts to dial up pressure on both sides of the devastating conflict, having also previously slapped sanctions on RSF commanders accused of widespread civilian atrocities.
