The Nigeria National Sports Commission (NSC) has introduced one of the country’s most attractive welfare packages to date for Team Nigeria athletes ahead of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
Approved by NSC Chairperson Shehu Dikko, the new incentive scheme aims to heavily motivate both athletes and officials throughout their preparations and the competition. Under the revised structure, representatives will benefit from increased daily allowances, enhanced travel support, and substantial cash bonuses for making the podium.
The daily allowance for each athlete has been bumped up to 308 000 Nigerian Nairas ($200) per day for the duration of the games, while coaches will take home 385 000 Nairas ($250) daily. This marks a notable upgrade from the 231 000 Nairas ($150) paid to athletes and 308 000 Nairas ($200) paid to coaches during the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.
The podium reward system has also seen a major financial boost. Athletes who secure a gold medal will walk away with an immediate cash prize of 4.6 million Nairas ($3 000). Silver medalists will earn 3.1 million Nairas ($2 000), while bronze medalists will receive 1.5 million Nairas ($1 000). The commission confirmed that coaches will also pocket financial rewards for every medal won by their respective athletes.
