Rwandan authorities have rescued at least 289 citizens, predominantly young people, from human trafficking networks operating across several foreign nations, mainly in Asia.
The successful rescue and repatriation operation took place between July 2025 and March this year following a co-ordinated effort between the Rwandan government, diplomatic missions abroad, and international agencies such as the International Organisation for Migration.
Details of the operation were revealed by Minister of Justice Emmanuel Ugirashebuja during an appearance before the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, National Unity, and Security.
“These cases came to light through co-operation between the government of Rwanda and international partners. Traffickers operated in Rwanda promising young people lucrative job opportunities overseas, but upon arrival, the situation was vastly different,” said Ugirashebuja.
